WIP -October 9

Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
The second attempt at the second glove is progressing well. The reason for the restart is first attempt the tension was too loose. My fear is that this time the tension will be too tight. Upside I'm almost ready to attach the thumb.

Card Marking:Birthday Cards
Two of my friends and I have started to meet once a month to work on paper crafts. It's a hobby we all like to do but seem never to have the time to do. This is one of the projects I came up with recently:

The Simple Woman Daybook 136

FOR TODAY: October 6, 2013
You can find the more daybooks at Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my window...the leaves are changing colour.

I am thinking...so much for blogging everyday...boo.

I am thankful for...books!

In the kitchen...there are dishes to wash but I'm more excited about making soup tonight.

I am wearing...cute shoes!

I am creating...fingerless gloves. Half way done the second glove..

I am going...on an adventure.

I am wondering...about prayer -still. The question on my mind is "do we change God's mind with prayer". I am reading Brother Andrew's Prayer Works. He words things in ways that sound wrong but once he explains sound right

I am reading...Prayer Works, 100 Days of Prayer, and Deep and Wide.

I am hoping...to create a schedule to better stay with the workout plan.

I am looking forward to...a craft day tomorrow with some friends.

I am learning...to play a new game about growing bamboo and feeding a panda called Takenoko.

I am hearing...Bink -the Doctor Who episode.

Around the house...the wasps are getting worse and I want to start organizing the office. The wasps is the bigger issue.

One of my favorite things...the new game I just learned to play a new game about growing bamboo and feeding a panda called Takenoko.

A few plans for the rest of the week:...adventure game this afternoon, crafts with friends tomorrow, youth group Thursday, youth group serving project Saturday, and Sunday the children's ministry is "visiting" Zimbabwe.

Blogging Plans:...I think tomorrow I'll skip blogging since I've already missed the blog everyday. Tuesday I'm going to post about a youth group event. Sacredness will be a new WIP (Works In Progress) and a Survivor prediction. Hoping for a Thankful Thursday post this week. I'm working on a Board Game Top Ten for Friday.

The Simple Woman Daybook 135

FOR TODAY: October 1, 2013
You can find the more daybooks at Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my window...it is night so the blinds are closed. I am guessing darkness.

I am thinking...so many thoughts, like, it's been a month since the last time I did a daybook post, life is better when I write daily, possible future blog posts, the show Person of Interest, a new game I played for the first time tonight and Japan.

I am thankful for...friends I can call/count to help even on short notice.

In the kitchen...is a couch.

I am wearing...my awesome new boots (brown lace up), brown shirt, and a grey Third Day hoodie, I have a more fashionable shirt underneath but I got cold.

I am creating...fingerless gloves. The first one is done, almost done the second one but the second one is longer. I think my tension was looser. I'm not really sure what to do.

I am going...home to sleep as soon as I've posted this.

I am wondering...can we change God's mind with prayer. It was a statement that came up in a book I'm read by Brother Andrew, Prayer Works. I am also pondering a question my favourite atheist asked the other day, "Does God's actions ever have unintended consequences?"

I am reading...Shadow Games, Scott Pilgrim Vol 4, Prayer Works, 100 Days of Prayer, and Deep and Wide.

I am hoping...that I keen my motivational/imagination wave all the way till Christmas. It seems motivation to start new projects hits all at once for everything and that can be overwhelming.

I am looking forward to....all the change that is happening with little steps.

I am learning...to play a new game about growing bamboo and feeding a panda called Takenoko.

I am hearing...Island in the Sun....and not Black Sheep

Around the house...there is a couch in the middle of my kitchen because I was given a TV yesterday. I also realized I've been in the apartment a year this month! It's still a great spot for me. Minus the wasps nest under the siding near the bathroom window. There is always 1-5 wasps in the bathroom. Landlord is taking care of but I sadly I discovered the trouble when one of the evil things flew up my skirt and stung me three times. Oh, and I'm still having trouble with the bathtub drain. That's mostly because I am ingnoring the problem (always a healthy conflict resolution option, right?)

One of my favorite things...board games.

A few plans for the rest of the week:...coffee with a former youth group person tomorrow and Life Group in the evening, youth group Thursday, GEMS Friday, and then Sunday the children's ministry is "visiting" Zimbabwe.

Blogging Plans:...I am not going to do BlogPoMo this year in November; it is just too much with NaNoWriMo. But I like the challenge so I'm going to try to post everyday this month.  Tomorrow will be a new WIP (Works In Progress) and a Survivor prediction. Hoping for a Thankful Thursday post this week. I'm working on a Board Game Top Ten for Friday.

I kinda want to do more Talking With An Atheist posts. Also need to do something about my healthy Body Revelation progress; it has been a month. There are a lot of topics worth sharing and some that might only interest me.

Survivor 27: Blood VS. Water

Survivor is back!

And so returns the Bowl of Stew(art) blog prediction and reviews. I haven't done this for a few seasons but this one looks like its going to be great season full of twists, turns, and blindsides! The big stick this season is one tribe is made up of returning players (like All-Star, Heroes vs. Villains, and Redemption). The newbie tribe is made of up of relative or loved one of the returning players.

Last week's premiere was so much fun. It began with the ten pairs (returning player and loved one) being dropped off alone and having to spend the night on the beach. It was neat seeing how different groups coped with the challenge.

The next surprise happened when they were all gathered with host Jeff Probst. They were divided into Galang (returning players) and Tadhana (loved ones). The pairs didn't realize they wouldn't be on the same tribes but the real twist was that both groups would immediately vote out a member out of their tribe. Tadhana voted out Laura (Rupert's wife). Galang voted out Candice (Cook Islands & Heroes vs. Villains). I would have voted for Colton. Then Jeff gave the safe loved ones a chance to switch places with the recently voted out. Rupert was AWESOME! Before Jeff could explain consequences he stepped up and switched spots. "Laura deserves to play. Blood is thicker than anything. Laura and I are blood.” We then learned that Rupert wasn't out of the game. Redemption Island is back in play. Candace and her husband John decided to keep things the way they were. She was confident she would win her way back into the game.

We then were treated to camp life. Galang wasted no time making fire and establishing camp. I felt for Laura, now on with the alumina and feeling the need to prove she shouldn't be voted out first. The loved ones on Tadhana seemed more to struggle more. At the challenge it didn't show. They had the physical advantage and were in the lead till the puzzle. The veteran puzzle solvers won immunity for Galang. At tribal council Marissa was blinded sided. She was voted out because of her Uncle Gervase (Borneo) poor behavior doing a victory dance at the challenge.

Current Standings:
Predictions:
Galang: Gervase is in trouble because of his weak performance in challenges and Colton's personality might be enough to send him to Redemption Island.

Tadhana : If the guys stay together they have the numbers to keep voting out girls. I hope Brad goes, I find him annoying.

WIP -September 25

Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
I was at the cuff when I decided that they are still too big, so I ripped them out again. I've knit to just about the place were the thumb should be attached but the decreases aren't looking rights. My solution is to ripe back a third time and try something else.

Progress is being made! I have all the fingers finished except an index finger. I've also joined the four fingers of the left handed glove. Tonight I hope to attach the thumb. I am glad I started over. The fit is much better.

You can find the more daybooks at Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my window....foggy forest view.

I am thinking...of the best way to tell today's Bible story in Kidsworld, costume designs, and a story I'm reading.

I am thankful for...friends and plans.

I am creating...fingerless gloves.

I am going...to have a very full day.

I am wondering...where I put my journal.

I am reading...Dark Whispers and Deep and Wide.

One of my favorite things...movie deals.

A few plans for the rest of the week:...Today is full: a DU (destination unknown) with youth group, play in the park, followed by the drive in (three movies), then a sleepover. The rest of the week I'm unsure about youth group returns to Thursday and GEMS registration Friday. The rest is a mystery Future Liz will discover.

WIP (Works In Progress): August 28

Current Project: Fingerless Gloves

All I have to show at the moment is a ball of yarn. Monday I had all the fingers done and the first glove was knit to just before the cuff but it was sadly becoming apparent that the final glove would be at least a size or so too big so I ripped everything out. I haven't started over yet.

This was the glove on Sunday before I started over:

Plans for Posting and Bathtub Drain Woes

Plans for Posting
First off, blogging plans for the rest of the week and beyond. I figure if I don't share what I am thinking its all going to stay in my head. That has been the summer pattern. If however I let you know what I want to post it's more likely to happen (positive pressure to do what I say I will) -it has worked in the past.

Tomorrow I'm to start a WIP (Work's In Progress) series sharing creative project I'm working on or have recently completed. It will have things like knitting, card making, costumes, sets and decorations of children's ministry, Pinterest attempts, and writing projects. It's going to start as a weekly post but if it is too repetitive (I'm some times slow with projects) it might become a bi-weekly or monthy feature.

Thursday will be a return of thanksgiving (Thankful Thursdays). One of my personal birthday challenges is to create a list of 1000 things or people I am thankful for. I've got a journal and have found writing three things each day is the best way to achieve this goal. I'll be sharing highlights from these entries on Thursdays.

Friday is going to be a review of my newest board game. I don't think Rate the Fun will be a regular blog feature but I would like share more about board games like reviews, top ten lists, and introduce game reviewers and websites.

Other upcoming posts are going to be on the youth groups thrift shop formals (both this years and last years themes), this years backyard clubs, and the preparation for a large group game I did with the youth group. I want to do episode reviews and predictions again of the next season of Survivor. I know most people are done with Survivor but this years twist (family members) sounds interesting to me. Another series I'm considering adding is "Liz getting healthy". I've order The Jillian Michaels Body Revolution; it should arrive next week. I am hoping to blog my results. It might be boring to most readers but I could use the accountability and encouragement.

Bathtub Drain Woes
After reading about my clogged drain and bathtub plug troubles a couple from my church explained what I needed to do. My bathtub plug is a "push-pull tub stopper"

They gave the right advice but the knob is too tight. So yesterday when I followed their directions nothing happened. My solution was to ask Google for help because Google knows everything (and the internet never lies)! Not only was the knob too tight, I lacked tools to help me solve the problem. What I think I need is a flathead screwdriver and pliers. Once I have acquired the necessary tools I'll make my next attempt. I really need to buy a small tool kit for the house.

Design Project For Children's Ministry

A chunk of my day was spent working on the updating the children's ministry website for the summer programs. Actually, the time was devoted to making a banner header for the page. I am using GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP).

I'm still just learning to use GIMP, what all the tools are and how to make those tools do what I want. It's been all self taught with MUCH help from youtube tutorial videos and trial and error. And this is what I came up with:
The New Hope Kids logo is something I've been working on for a while. The castle image is from Group's Kingdom Rock clip art, you can see the original here. I had to do some flipping and adding to get landscape to cover the whole banner. This is how it looks on the webpage:

In someways I feel I have little to show for the day. I have a snazzy banner but no content on the site. That will be tomorrow's task. In other ways I am pleased as punch with how well the banner turned out. I am happy with it but I wonder if it still need something, maybe more words. I've been considering "adventure awaits you this summer" or something like that. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Back to Blogging

"Publish or Parish"

After two months without new content and only four post in the months before things don't look to good for the Blow of Stew(art). Without excuses, I just haven't wanted to write. The few occasions I've had interesting thoughts I've been far from a computer or the internet and by the time I was the thought has lost or seemed "too old".

The thing I realized this week was that I missed blogging. Nothings changed I just missed the thinking and sharing that can happen on a blog that doesn't on Facebook. So, grab the writing defibrillator...we're going to try and save the blog!

What's new?

Since my 32nd birthday (and the last post before thing) this is what's been going on:
  • A dear friend moved away it was sad and buying her couch and zero gravity chair does not make up for the lost.
  • I've discovered a new "board" game, The Resistance. It's designed for 5-10 players and has been a hit at youth group. Might be the first game I review if I resume the "rate the fun" posts.
  • I've been preparing for the youth group's 4th annual Frenchy formal and the church's summer Backyard clubs. I'm excited for both these events, especially the themes. The youth group event is Willy Wonka and the Backyard Clubs will be Group's medieval VBS Kingdom Rock.
  • I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness and loved it so I watched it again and then watch Wrath of Khan.
  • I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks and a bit of reading. The books that I'm thinking about right now are ADD Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life and If You Will Ask
  • My family is visiting in 11 sleeps!!!
  • And last a celebration......
....my baby sister turned 13 today!

Movie Goal from 2011:
I wanted to average about 5 movies a month for a total of 60 movies over the year.
I did better than I expected averaging just 4.5 movies a month.

2013 Movie Goal:
I don't really have a goal for the 2013. I am happy with the amount of movies I watched. Most of which I watched with friends. Between church life, writing group, and friends I am not home alone often -meaning I am not renting movies to fill the apartment with sound. If the averages says around where it's at I'll be happy. Even if I my movies watch increases but I am watching with friends I'll be happy. We'll see if it happens.

    Pursuing Passions in 2013

Happy New Year friends and faithful readers!

After a restful blogging break, which allowed me to recover from November's novelizing and enjoy Christmas with my family, I am back and looking forward to new challenges in 2013. The first day has already be rather pleasant and rewarding. I read my Bible, had a nice walk, enjoyed my meal, watched the Doctor Who Christmas special, and thought up some reading challenges.

I've given some thought to a new resolution theme for the year: "pursuing passions". In 2009 I set all my resolutions to an alliteration of C's naming it The Year of the Letter "C”. The clear goals kept me focused but not overwhelmed and the alliteration was quirky enough that it made remembering fun. So, I kept it going. 2010's goals were centered around the Letter "L”, 2011 was all about the Letter "F" and last year, 2012, was the Letter "H". In keeping with the tradition, this year is the letter "P" for pursuing passions and priorities. Trying to express my priorities I thought of three groups to I want to focus on this year:
    • Praise and Prayer -my relationship with God and spiritual growth
    • People and Parties -others and hosting
    • Painting and Play -activities and hobbies that rejuvenate me and give me joy
So those my 2013 goals. I think it is going to be great year. What goals, challenge, or resolutions have you set for the new year?
